The Belluz name in terrazzo tile and marble began in the mid-1920s when Sebastiano Belluz, Neil’s grandfather, along with four other partners, began a small terrazzo company in Texas, US. All of the partners were from Italy, where the terrazzo flooring system was incepted. With their knowledge and skill of creating a seamless floor, the partners were moderately successful.
With the great depression in the 1930s, the partnership struggled and the company was closed for business. Sebastiano was forced to return to Italy from the United States in 1933 only to return to Canada in 1949. Upon his return to Canada, the owners of the then Kent Tile & Marble met Sebastiano at the Hamilton train station – now Liuna station, and asked him to work immediately on a fancy terrazzo job at St. Joseph’s hospital – refer to photo on this page. Sebastiano was known for his finesse and keen eye with terrazzo finishing.
In 1954 Sebastiano joined sons Giacinto (Jim) and Enzo (Neil’s father) in their newly founded company Jim & E Tile.
Today, Neil Belluz is continuing the tradition of his father and grandfather with Senate Flooring Inc.
